IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In our daily food, we consumed different types of nutrients from food which were good for our health. But, any of the nutrients if we ate too much, it would be unhealthy for our health.
In the USA, People mainly consumed sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals. In breakfast, 14 percentage of sodium, 16 percentage of saturated fats and 16 percentage of added sugar consumed by the people of the USA. So, we observed that all these 3 types of nutrients were almost equally covered through breakfast which is very good for people of the USA.
In lunch, sodium, saturated fats and added sugar was taken by the people of the USA, 29,26 and 19 percentage respectively. On comparison of breakfast, the sodium percentage was a but high but not much to worry on this and others are almost normal or good for them.
In snacks, 14% sodium, 21% saturated fats and 42% added sugars was gained from the meals by all the people. From this, we could observe that added sugar percentage was much higher than other nutrients which was not at all good for them. They need to reduce this added sugar percentage from the meal to improve their health in future.
In dinner, 43% sodium, 37% saturated fats and 23% added sugars was gained by the people of the USA. So from this we could see that sodium percentage was much higher than added sugar. So, to make the dinner more healthy, people should concentrate to reduce sodium and slightly increase added sugar part for their health in dinner.
In conclusion, we can say that breakfast is the most health food taken by the people of the USA compare to other meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting on the three nutrients across the four meal types. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and includes subjective commentary, such as 'not much to worry on this' or 'not at all good for them', which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. The task requires an objective summary of the data rather than health advice. While the main features are identified, the comparison between categories could be more analytical. The conclusion is a bit simplistic, focusing on healthiness rather than summarizing the data trends effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific meal type, which helps the reader follow the information. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In lunch', 'In snacks', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions are mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from breakfast through to dinner. However, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There is some repetition of phrases like 'consumed by the people of the USA' and 'percentage of'. The student uses basic terms such as 'good' and 'normal' to describe data, which lacks the academic tone expected. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'most health food' instead of 'healthiest meal'. To improve, the student should incorporate more varied reporting verbs and adjectives to describe trends and proportions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('sodium... was taken', 'added sugar percentage were'), and awkward phrasing ('14 percentage of sodium'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in the use of commas and articles. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student should focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and prepositions in data reporting.
