IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The three pie charts illustrates the average proportion of sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar contained in four types of meals in the USA: breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner.

Overall, dinner accounts for the largest share of sodium and saturated fats, whereas snacks contain the highest proportion of added sugar. Breakfast contains the smallest percentage of all three nutrients, except that it is equal to snacks for sodium.

Dinner represents the greatest proportion of sodium consumption, at 43%, followed be lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks each account 14%. A similar pattern can be seen with saturated fat, where dinner makes up 37%, while lunch contributes the smallest percentage of all three nutrients.

The distribution of added sugar is different. Snacks are the main source of added sugar, comprising 42%. Dinner accounts for 23%, while lunch contributes 19%. Breakfast has the smallest proportion, at 16%. Thus, snacks contain almost twice added sugar as dinner and more than twice the amount found in breakfast.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively summarizes the main features of the charts. You have successfully identified the key trends for sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar across the four meal types. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant differences, such as dinner being the primary source of sodium and saturated fats, while snacks dominate in added sugar. You have made relevant comparisons throughout the text. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned that lunch contributes the smallest percentage of saturated fat, but the chart indicates that breakfast is actually the lowest. Careful checking of the data against the visual information is essential for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the information by nutrient type. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'whereas', 'A similar pattern', and 'Thus' to link your sentences and ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of nutrients. The flow is generally smooth, and the relationship between the different meal types and nutrient levels is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Terms like 'proportion', 'accounts for', 'distribution', and 'comprising' are used accurately. There is some awareness of style, and the vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report. While the range is adequate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more varied synonyms for 'highest' or 'smallest' to avoid repetition. The vocabulary used is precise enough to communicate the data without any ambiguity, meeting the requirements for a solid band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally good. However, there are a few minor slips, such as 'The three pie charts illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'followed be lunch' (a typo for 'by'). Additionally, the phrase 'almost twice added sugar as dinner' is slightly awkward; it would be more natural to say 'almost twice as much added sugar as dinner'. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammatical control is consistent.
