Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of the three nutrients across the four meal categories. You successfully highlight the key trends, such as dinner being the primary source for sodium and saturated fat, and snacks being the highest for added sugar. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary paragraph, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 response. While the data is accurate, the presentation is somewhat mechanical, listing figures without fully synthesizing the information to provide a cohesive summary of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is essentially one long paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow. There is a lack of paragraphing to separate the introduction from the body analysis. Furthermore, the use of cohesive devices is very limited; the text relies on run-on sentences and lacks appropriate transition words or punctuation to guide the reader. For example, the transition between the discussion of sodium and saturated fat is abrupt. To improve, you should use clear paragraph breaks and a wider variety of linking words like 'in contrast', 'furthermore', or 'consequently' to connect your ideas logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use basic terms like 'tell the situation' and 'bigest contributor'. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'stituation', 'brakfast', 'snakcs', 'diffretns', and 'approcimatly', which distract the reader. While you successfully use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'nutrients', 'sodium', and 'saturated fat', the range is limited. To reach a higher band, focus on using more varied synonyms and ensuring accurate spelling of common academic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding punctuation and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on, lacking full stops or commas to separate distinct ideas, such as '...saturated fat with dinner again being the bigest contributor at 37% while lunch account for 26%...'. There are also subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'lunch account' instead of 'lunch accounts'. While you attempt some complex structures, the lack of punctuation makes the text difficult to parse. Focusing on basic sentence construction and consistent punctuation would significantly improve the clarity of your writing.
