IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The above pie charts illustrates the amount of three types of nutrients in different meals, and all of them might have deleterious effect on health if consumed too much.
Overall it can be seen that, all above data and results vary a lot ,with dinner constitutes much proportion of all three nutrients, that are (sodium, saturated fat, and sugar), though a bit lower in added sugar.Proportion of breakfast in three nutrients usually remain almost same and it is also least present in different meals.
The three nutrients are present in plenty in dinner with sodium having 43 percent, followed by saturated fat and then added sugar.Snacks are the meals that have much added sugar of about 42 percent with least having sodium of about 14 percent.
As far as breakfast and lunch are concerned they have very low nutrients present, with sodium and saturated fat are present only 14 percent and 16 percent and 29 and 26 percent respectively in mentioned meals.
Breakfast and lunch have approximately similar proportion of above mentioned nutrients, however clear variation is observed in dinner and snacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the high levels of nutrients in dinner and the significant sugar content in snacks. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, stating that breakfast and lunch have 'very low nutrients' is a generalization that lacks specific data support. The comparison between categories is sometimes confusing, such as the mention of '29 and 26 percent' without clearly attributing these figures to specific nutrients or meals. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to their respective categories and that comparisons are precise rather than vague.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow of ideas is somewhat mechanical. While there is an attempt at an overview, the transition between the description of dinner and snacks is abrupt. The use of cohesive devices is present (e.g., 'As far as... are concerned', 'however'), but they are sometimes used in a way that makes the sentences feel disjointed. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the percentages for breakfast and lunch, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison. Improving the logical progression between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. Phrases like 'vary a lot' and 'much proportion' are somewhat informal and imprecise. While the student correctly identifies the nutrients, the repetition of 'present' and 'meals' limits the lexical variety. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'deleterious effect' (which is good) contrasted with 'much added sugar' (which is awkward). To improve, the student should focus on using more precise quantifiers and varied synonyms for 'amount' or 'proportion' to describe the data more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, such as 'charts illustrates' and 'dinner constitutes much proportion'. There are also punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and awkward phrasing like 'that are (sodium, saturated fat, and sugar)'. The sentence structure in the fourth paragraph is particularly fragmented, making the comparison difficult to parse. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
