Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the charts, including the highest and lowest values for each nutrient across the four meal categories. The overview is clear and highlights the key trends, such as dinner being the most significant source of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks dominate in added sugar. Comparisons are made throughout, and the data is accurately reported. The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear summary of the information presented in the charts. No significant information is omitted, and the selection of data is appropriate for an IELTS Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group the data effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'followed by', and 'while' are used to link ideas and compare the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of nutrients. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the response, and the information flows logically from one point to the next. The use of referencing is generally effective, ensuring the reader can easily follow the comparisons being made between the different meals.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'category', and 'respectively' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing, such as 'accounted at' (should be 'accounted for') and 'saturated food' (should be 'saturated fat'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band score. The student demonstrates a good grasp of topic-specific vocabulary, but more sophisticated synonyms or varied collocations would enhance the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'while' clauses and comparative structures. There are some grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'Breakfast represent' (should be 'represents') and 'snacks accounted' (should be 'accounted for'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and preposition errors, such as 'in added sugar category' (should be 'in the added sugar category'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. The control of grammar is generally good, but more error-free complex sentences are needed for a higher score.
