Student answer (Band 5.0)

Given chart displays the percentage in typical meals of three nutrients, consumed in USA. Let me discuss all of them.

First, there is 14% sodium in the breakfast and 29% in lunch. While 43% sodium added in dinner and 14% in snacks.

Second, there is 16% saturated fat in breakfast and 26% in lunch. On the other hand there is 37% saturated fat included in dinner and 21% in snacks.

Third, there is 16% sugar added in breakfast and 19% in lunch. While there is 23% sugar added in dinner and 42% in snacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the three nutrients and their proportions across four meal types. However, the structure is repetitive and lacks a clear overview or summary of the main trends. The student lists data points mechanically rather than synthesizing the information. For example, the essay describes each meal category in separate, short paragraphs without highlighting the most significant features, such as the high sodium content in dinner or the dominance of sugar in snacks. To improve, the student should group data logically and provide a clear, concise overview of the most striking differences or similarities observed in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression is mechanical and repetitive. The use of transition words like 'First', 'Second', 'Third', and 'Now' is overly simplistic and creates a list-like structure rather than a cohesive report. There is a lack of varied cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly. For instance, the transition between describing the data and comparing it is abrupt. The referencing is also somewhat unclear in the comparison section, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logic of the analysis. Improving the flow requires using a wider range of linking words and better paragraph integration.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic verbs like 'is', 'added', and 'included'. There is little attempt to use academic or descriptive language to convey the data effectively. Furthermore, there are several spelling errors, such as 'sodim', 'suger', 'rlatively', 'ancluded', and 'fdat'. These errors, while not always impeding communication, demonstrate a lack of control over basic vocabulary. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'account for', 'constitute', 'predominate', or 'a significant proportion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies on simple sentence structures, which are often repetitive. There is a lack of complex sentence forms, and the grammar is frequently inaccurate. For example, 'There is 14% sodium in the breakfast' is grammatically awkward, and phrases like 'Now see the comparison' are too informal for an academic task. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as '14% sodium is ancluded in which is less than'. The punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the comparison paragraphs. A greater variety of sentence structures and more careful proofreading for basic grammatical errors are necessary.
