Overall Band Score: 6.5 · Cambridge IELTS 14 · 2026-09-12

IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates the average amount of specific nutrients in daily meals, all of which can pose health risks if consumed in excess. The three nutrients are, sodium, sugar and fats. Additionally, the different meals include breakfast, dinner, lunch and snacks.

We can see that both sodium and fats are present in excessive amounts in dinner. Furthermore, we can also observe that on average snacks contain an extremely high amount of sugar.

The charts visualize the over-saturation of the dinner with sodium and saturated fats. On average, 43% of the total sodium consumed by a person in a day is at the dinner. Similarly, dinner contains an average 37% share of the total saturated fats across the entire day.

In addition to this we can observe that an enormous amount of the total sugar intake is contributed by snacks. Snacks contribute to about 42% of the total sugar consumed across the day, being far ahead of any other meal. Dinner is second on the list as it contains 23% of the daily sugar intake.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well by identifying the three nutrients and the four meal types, and it provides clear comparisons such as noting that dinner has the highest sodium (43%) and saturated fats (37%), while snacks contribute the most sugar (42%). The key features are accurately selected and reported. However, the student misses breakfast and lunch data for sodium and fats, which prevents the response from reaching the highest bands. Overall, the main features are well-developed and supported with accurate data percentages.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is generally coherent and has a clear overall arrangement. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving from a general introduction to specific breakdowns of dinner and snacks. Paragraphing is used to separate different thoughts, such as separating the general overview from the detailed data points. However, some cohesive devices feel slightly repetitive or mechanical, such as starting multiple sentences with 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', or 'In addition to this we can observe'. Referencing is mostly clear, though paragraph transitions could be smoother to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, using terms such as 'over-saturation', 'excessive amounts', 'proportion', and 'intake'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some awkward phrasing appears, such as 'at the dinner' instead of 'at dinner' or 'contributed by snacks'. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the competent range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and passive constructions, such as 'all of which can pose health risks if consumed in excess'. There are minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'is at the dinner' and 'contains an average 37% share', which reveal slight lapses in preposition usage and article omission. Nevertheless, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, allowing the majority of sentences to remain clear and grammatically sound.
