Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by reporting information about sodium, saturated fats, and sugar in typical meals in the USA. However, the report lacks a clear overview and struggles with accurate data reporting, often confusing the specific meals and nutrient proportions. For example, the student writes that 'the amount of the sodium in dinner is highest in comparison of the other two nutrients', but misinterprets several other comparative trends across the meals. The lack of structured paragraphing also hinders the overall coverage. Consequently, the response falls into the Band 5 descriptor for Task Achievement because it addresses the task only partially, presenting limited and sometimes inaccurate data interpretation without a clear overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is written as a single, dense block of text with no paragraph breaks, which significantly impacts its readability and visual structure. Although some cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In the overall comparison', their use is often repetitive and mechanically forced rather than logically effective. There is a lack of clear progression throughout the response, and ideas circle back on themselves repetitively, especially regarding the levels of sodium, saturated fat, and sugar in dinner and snacks. This places the response firmly at Band 5 due to some organisation but a distinct lack of clear overall progression and inadequate paragraphing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used throughout the response is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms like 'percentage', 'amount', 'sodium', 'saturated fats', and 'sugar'. There are noticeable limitations in lexical range, and several awkward collocations appear, such as 'the numbers of sodium is highest'. While the meaning is generally decipherable, the lack of varied or less common vocabulary prevents the response from achieving a higher band. It meets the Band 5 criteria because the lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice and repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical structures are relatively basic, consisting mainly of simple sentences and repetitive subject-verb-object patterns like 'The sugar percentage is highest...' or 'The amount of the saturated fat is high...'. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the numbers of sodium is highest', 'the amount of the sugar in highest') and missing articles or incorrect prepositions. However, these errors do not completely impede communication. Because the writer uses a limited range of structures with frequent errors, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
