Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the pie charts regarding three unhealthy nutrients in typical meals. However, the response suffers from notable inaccuracies in interpreting the data. For instance, the student states that dinner makes up fewer than half of sodium, whereas the chart shows sodium in dinner at 43%, and added sugar in snacks accounts for almost 42% (correctly identified). The comparisons across meals are sometimes unclear or confusing, such as 'day time meal they both make up of just over 25 %.' While the overall structure covers all meals and nutrients, the errors in data reporting and somewhat underdeveloped comparisons place this response at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organized into paragraphs with introductory and body sections, attempting a logical progression. However, cohesion is heavily impacted by mechanical and inaccurate cohesive devices, such as 'in overall' and awkward transitions like 'To begin with' and 'Conversely'. Referencing is frequently unclear, and the paragraphing lacks smooth transitions between ideas. Punctuation and spacing issues further disrupt the flow of information. Despite these faults, there is a discernible overall arrangement of the data points, warranting a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, utilizing terms like 'nutritional components', 'proportion', and 'meal'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'casual meal' instead of 'daily meals' or specific meal times, and 'light refreshment' for snacks. Spelling and formatting errors, such as missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and lowercase 'in overall', occur frequently. The range is minimally adequate for the task, but errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing it at a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammatical structures attempted include a mix of simple and occasional complex forms, but these are frequently faulty. Examples of errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('The given pie charts illustrates'), missing auxiliary verbs ('breakfast contains the just under 20 %'), and incorrect prepositions ('share significant ratio in evening meal'). Punctuation is weak, marked by spaces before commas and inconsistent capitalization. The high frequency of basic and complex structural errors causes persistent difficulty for the reader, aligning with Band 4.5, which rounds to Band 5.0 or represents Band 4.5 descriptors.
