Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the charts by discussing sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar across four meal types. However, there are significant issues with data accuracy and missing comparisons. For instance, the text claims that for snacks the highest proportion was seen in snacks and that added sugar was around 42%, but misinterprets several key values and fails to present a fully coherent overview. Furthermore, the response falls short of the minimum length requirement, containing only 125 words compared to the required 150 words. This under-length impacts the overall task fulfillment, leading to a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is organized into paragraphs, starting with an introduction followed by an overview and detail paragraphs. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. There is a lack of proper capitalization and punctuation throughout the text (e.g., lowercase starting letters in sentences like "the pie chart illustrate"). Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as "in detail" and "similarly" which do not appropriately connect the disparate data points. Referencing between ideas is at times unclear, creating a choppy and disjointed reading experience that warrants a band score of 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited range of vocabulary adequate for basic description, such as proportion, consumed, and accounted for. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors, such as "sugat" instead of sugar and "repersented" and "propoertion". Less common lexical items are attempted but often inaccurate or inappropriate for an academic report. The restricted vocabulary range and repeated errors in word form and spelling prevent the response from achieving a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts some complex structures, but these are often faulty or incomplete, such as "followed by added sugar was only 23%" and "breakfast for just 14% and it remained constant at 16%of saturated and added sugar." There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, including missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences and after full stops, comma splices, and omitted verbs. Simple sentences dominate, and control over grammar is weak, leading to a band score of 5.0.
