IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts illustrate the average proportion of sodium, saturated fat and sugars in various typical meals consumed in the USA which can be harmful to health if consumed in excessive amounts.

Overall, it is evident that people consume highest amounts of sodium during lunch and dinner and the least during breakfast, whereas a large proportion of sugar is consumed during snack time.

Firstly, the percentage of sodium is the highest at dinner, at 43%, followed by 29% at lunch. However, the figures are identical for breakfast and snacks at 14% each. Similarly, the figures for saturated fat and sugar are the same at breakfast, at 16% each.

Furthermore, 42% of added sugar is consumed during snack time, which is twice as much as the proportion of saturated fat consumed at the same time, at 21%. During lunch, 26% of saturated fat and 19% of sugar are consumed and during dinner time, the corresponding figures are 37% and 23%, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the charts and providing relevant comparisons. The overview clearly highlights the key trends, noting that sodium is consumed in the highest quantities during lunch and dinner, whereas added sugar peaks during snack time. The specific data points cited, such as 43% for sodium at dinner and 42% for added sugar during snacks, accurately reflect the source visual data. The response is well-supported with accurate figures and avoids misinterpretations, meeting all the requirements for a high band in task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The writing demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The response begins with an appropriate introductory paraphrase and a concise overview paragraph. Paragraphing is used effectively, with body paragraphs separated logically into discussions of sodium followed by comparisons of saturated fat and sugar. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', 'Similarly', and 'Furthermore' are employed to guide the reader smoothly through the data, although referencing is at times slightly mechanical. Overall, the flow of information is natural and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for an Academic Task 1 response. Phrases like 'average proportion', 'excessive amounts', 'corresponding figures', and 'twice as much as' demonstrate lexical flexibility and precision. There are occasional slight awkwardness in phrasing, such as 'highest amounts of sodium during lunch and dinner and the least during breakfast', but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally well-suited to reporting statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate structures (e.g., 'which can be harmful to health if consumed in excessive amounts'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is handled correctly. Control of grammar is strong throughout, with only minor non-systematic slips that never impede communication. Complex structures are attempted with a good degree of success.
