Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to summarize the charts showing the average percentages of three unhealthy nutrients in typical US meals. However, the structure of the essay is flawed, opening with an irrelevant generalization about outside food and hygiene that is not present in the prompt. While the student does report several figures for sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar across breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, the overview of the data is weak. The conclusion contains inappropriate personal opinions and recommendations regarding walking after meals, which is not required or appropriate for an academic task 1. Despite these issues, the main features are touched upon, leading to a band score of 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The organization of the essay is disrupted by unconventional paragraphing and placement of the introduction and body paragraphs. The student places the conclusion before the body paragraphs ('To conclude... To begin with...'). Cohesive devices are mechanically used and sometimes awkward, such as 'After that' and 'Moreover'. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression lacks a logical flow due to the disorganized structure. Paragraphing is not used effectively, as the introductory and concluding elements are interspersed improperly. For these reasons, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is a mix of adequate and inappropriate choices. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but often with errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'unhyginic', 'ingesting', 'devouring', and 'dine in on large proportion'. Spelling errors like 'unhyginic' and 'thet' are also present. While the range is sufficient to convey the basic data points, the frequent inaccuracies in lexical control limit the score to a 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex attempts are flawed by grammatical errors. Examples include 'as of their busy schedule', 'so thet food can get digest easily', and awkward phrasing like 'in dinner time sodium is consumed high among people of US'. Punctuation and article usage are frequently faulty. Errors occur across many sentences and occasionally impede communication, particularly when expressing complex ideas in the conclusion and introduction. Therefore, a band score of 5.0 is warranted.
