Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the charts, noting that breakfast has the lowest proportion of nutrients and dinner has the highest for sodium and saturated fat, while snacks dominate in added sugar. However, the response suffers from several data inaccuracies, such as stating added sugar is highest in snacks at 43% (the chart shows 42%) and claiming lunch is 19% for added sugar when the correct figure is 23% (19% is dinner for added sugar). Furthermore, the response is under-length at 128 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum requirement. Consequently, these inaccuracies and the length penalty pull the score down.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, attempting an overview and supporting details. However, the logical progression is weak due to abrupt transitions and fragmented sentences, such as 'Last but not the least 19% in lunch people often eaten in the USA.' Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively ('At the first glance', 'Additionally', 'However'), and the referencing is sometimes unclear, making the flow disjointed and difficult to follow in places.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms straight from the prompt such as 'proportion', 'nutrients', 'sodium', 'saturated fat', and 'added sugar'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'snacks time' instead of 'snack time' or 'snacks', and awkward phrasing like 'sodium nutrition in lunch'. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but frequent errors in word formation and collocation restrict it to a Band 5 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex structures, but control is weak. There are several severe grammatical errors and incomplete or fragmented sentences, such as 'too much intake may be unhealthy' and 'sodium nutrition in lunch 29%=' which terminates abruptly with an equals sign. Other errors include missing verbs and incorrect preposition use, such as 'consuming sodium and saturated fat in dinner'. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
