Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main data presented in the charts, correctly identifying key nutrient proportions across the four meal categories (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks). For example, the student notes that dinner has the highest sodium intake at 43% and that snacks are highest in added sugar at 42%. However, the overview is missing at the beginning, as the student jumps straight into the data without summarising the overarching trends. Additionally, some extraneous personal commentary is included (e.g., stating that sugar 'stimulate happy emotion'), which detracts from the objective tone required for Academic Task 1. Consequently, the response achieves a Band 5.5 for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text lacks standard paragraphing, appearing as a single dense block of writing with run-on sentences and missing punctuation. Cohesive devices are very basic or absent, with transitions like 'for the breakfast', 'for the lunch', and 'in other hand' used mechanically. While there is a chronological progression following the meals of the day, the overall organisation is hindered by poor punctuation, lack of capitalization, and a lack of clear signposting between ideas. This level of organisation aligns with Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent misspellings and awkward collocations, such as 'nutients' instead of nutrients, 'missout of sodium' instead of missing out on or accounting for sodium, and 'rest of the day meal'. There are some attempts to use topic-related terms like 'saturated fat', 'sodium', and 'added sugar', but inaccuracies in word formation and choice (e.g., 'most amount of sodium intake') restrict the range. The lexical control is consistent with a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures. Sentences are mostly simple or joined by coordinating conjunctions with little control over complex clauses. Punctuation is entirely absent throughout the text, leading to run-on sentences (e.g., starting new clauses without capital letters or full stops). There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the american's have') and missing prepositions ('compared to their rest of the day meal'). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and place the performance at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on overall comprehensibility.
