Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student successfully identifies the main features of the charts, providing an appropriate overview that highlights the dominance of sodium and saturated fat in dinner and added sugar in snacks. Data points are generally reported accurately, such as 43% for sodium in dinner and 42% for added sugar in snacks. However, the response contains some awkward phrasing in data reporting (e.g., omitting the percentage for saturated fat in the first body paragraph sentence: 'with percentages of 43%, 37% respectively'). Furthermore, the word count is 134 words, which fails to meet the mandatory 150-word minimum requirement. Consequently, a penalty is applied to the Task Achievement score for under-length.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the data. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Then'. However, some cohesive links and transitional phrases are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'On the sharp contrast,' which detracts from the fluency of the text. Paragraphing is present and logically structured, though the overall progression could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data reporting and nutrients (e.g., 'percentages', 'nutrients', 'sodium', 'saturated fat', 'added sugar', 'snacks'). However, the lexical range is limited, and there is repetition of basic verbs like 'consumed', 'used', and 'eaten'. There are also minor awkward collocations, such as 'usage of sodium and saturated fat' instead of 'consumption'. The range is sufficient for the task, but lacks flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The pie charts illustrate...' and 'Overall, it can be clearly seen that...'. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including a missing space in 'sodium , saturated fat', a missing article in 'inUSA', and minor preposition or phrasing issues. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and communication is not severely impeded.
