Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student has attempted to cover all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the charts regarding sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars in typical US meals. An overview is present, stating that sodium and saturated fat are mostly consumed at dinner while added sugar is consumed during snacks. However, there are numerous data inaccuracies in the body paragraphs. For example, the student writes that sodium in lunch and breakfast are 'same with percentage of 14%', whereas the data shows breakfast is 14% and lunch is 29% (snacks are 14%). Additionally, the sentence structure trails off and ends abruptly at the conclusion ('...in'), indicating an incomplete final thought. Because of these inaccuracies and the lack of precision in reporting, the task achievement is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response shows some organization through the use of transition markers such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly'. However, paragraphing is weak, and the overall progression is hampered by disjointed sentences and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, such as 'Individual consumed Sodium meals in dinner with 43%'. The final paragraph trails off abruptly without a proper concluding sentence. Referencing is occasionally confusing, making it difficult to follow the logical development of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive. The student relies on simple words like 'eat', 'meals', and 'percentage'. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'propotion' instead of proportion, 'united state' instead of the United States, 'haved' instead of consumed, and 'launch' instead of lunch. These errors, alongside imprecise collocations (e.g., 'sugar added meal in snack time'), indicate a limited lexical range suitable for a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but these attempts are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical errors include 'The pie chart illustrate' (subject-verb agreement error), 'all of this will be unhealthy' (reference and tense issues), and 'Average American eat sugar added meals' (missing article and pluralization errors). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, particularly in the introduction and second paragraph. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
