Student answer (Band 6.0)
The three pie chart illustrate the average proportion of three type of nutrients which is sodium, saturated fat and added sugar contained in typical meal and they may effect health if consume too much in USA.
Overall, dinner has the largest proportion of these nutrients while added sugar is mainly consumed in snacks. In contrast, breakfast contributes the smallest or joint-smallest percentages for all three nutrients.
Looking first at sodium, dinner represents the highest proportion at 43%, followed by the lunch at 29%. breakfast and snacks each account for 14%. A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat, with dinner making up the largest share at 37%, lunch contributes 26% while snacks account for 21% and breakfast has the lowest figure at 16%.
The figure for added sugar has different pattern. snacks made up the largest proportion at 42% which is almost twice the percentage of dinner at 23%. Lunch account for 19% while breakfast has the smallest share at 16%.
Therefore, snacks are the main source of added sugar whereas dinner is the main contributor of sodium and saturated fat.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar consumption across different meals in the USA. An effective overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting that dinner dominates sodium and saturated fat while snacks are the primary source of added sugar, and breakfast generally contributes the least. Key data points are accurately cited, such as dinner accounting for 43% of sodium and snacks making up 42% of added sugar. Comparisons between categories are made where relevant, fulfilling the requirements for Academic Task 1 very well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing each nutrient, and concludes with a brief summary statement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group information by category. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'A similar pattern can be seen', and 'In contrast' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the data, although referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'proportion', 'contributes', 'representation', and 'pattern'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'chart' instead of 'charts', 'type' instead of 'types', and lower-case letters at the beginning of sentences like 'breakfast' and 'snacks'. Despite these slips, the language is clear enough to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('nutrients which is sodium...') and comparative structures. Control of grammar is generally decent, but there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The three pie chart illustrate', 'nutrients which is', 'Lunch account') and punctuation/capitalization errors. While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band, they rarely impede the overall comprehension of the text.
