Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars in the USA. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting the highest figures for dinner (sodium) and snacks (added sugar), as well as noting the equality in breakfast. Key data points are accurately cited, such as dinner sodium at 43% and snack added sugar at 42%. Comparisons are made effectively across meals and nutrients, and all figures match the visual data closely. The response fully satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear progression from an introductory overview into detailed body paragraphs analyzing dinner, snacks, and lunch/breakfast. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'Conversely', and 'furthermore' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the data, although occasional transitions could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall coherent piece of writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to academic writing, including terms such as 'proportions', 'constituted', 'respectively', and 'conversely'. There are a few minor lexical slips, such as 'satutrated sugars' instead of 'saturated fat', and a missing preposition in 'added sugar made up 42%, in snacks which...'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey precise data points and comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which was the highest percentage across all nutrients and meals') and comparative structures. Grammatical accuracy is generally high, with the majority of sentences error-free. Minor punctuation errors are present, such as misplaced commas (e.g., 'at 42%, in snacks which'), but these do not interfere with understanding. The control of grammar is solid throughout.
