IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The visual illustrates three pie charts describing percentage of three nutrients in typical meals that are consumed in USA. Sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar are the nutrients that are unhealthy if eaten in large amount.
Consumption rate of sodium is the highest in the dinner which is 43%. In snacks and breakfast, its consumption rate is 14%, which is the lowest. breakfast has the average percentage of 29%.
Highest consumption rate of saturated fat is in dinner too with the percentage of 37%. Its lowest consumption is in the breakfast, which is 16%. Its average intake is in lunch which is 26%.
highest consumption rate of added sugar is 42% in the snacks. Its average intake is in the dinner and lowest is in breakfast with percentage of 16%.
Overall, dinner has the most consumption of these nutrients but added sugar is consumed more in the snacks than any other nutrient. Breakfast has the lowest consumption for all nutrients. Whereas, lunch has the average intake for these nutrients.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three charts. You correctly identified the key data points, such as sodium consumption peaking at 43 percent in dinner, saturated fat being highest in dinner at 37 percent, and added sugar peaking in snacks at 42 percent. An appropriate overall trend is provided in the final paragraph, noting that dinner accounts for the most overall consumption while snacks dominate added sugar intake. However, there is a minor error in paragraph two where lunch is mistakenly labelled as breakfast ('breakfast has the average percentage of 29%'), which affects precision. Despite this minor lapse, all three nutrients and their meal distributions are adequately covered.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The report has a clear overall progression, moving logically from an introduction to individual breakdowns for each nutrient, followed by an overview statement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each nutrient group. However, cohesion relies heavily on repetitive sentence openings such as 'Consumption rate of' and 'Highest consumption rate of', which makes the transitions feel somewhat mechanical. Referencing is mostly clear, though the sudden jump into the 29 percent figure for lunch in the second paragraph lacks a smooth transitional marker, causing a momentary disruption in readability. Overall arrangement is coherent, but greater variety in cohesive devices is needed for a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying statistical concepts using terms like 'consumption rate', 'percentage', and 'intake'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive, with the words 'consumption', 'rate', 'highest', and 'lowest' repeated frequently throughout the text. There are also slight lexical inaccuracies, such as using 'average percentage' or 'average intake' to describe lunch's 29 percent sodium value, rather than describing it as the second highest or intermediate value. Spelling is accurate, and vocabulary does not impede communication, but it lacks the flexibility and less common lexical items required for Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar are the nutrients that are unhealthy if eaten in large amount.' There are some grammatical errors, including missing plural forms or articles (e.g., 'in large amount', 'in the dinner', 'breakfast has the average percentage'), as well as capitalization issues at the start of sentences like 'breakfast'. Nevertheless, these errors are generally non-systematic and do not impede the overall communication of the data. Control over basic structures is sound, but greater accuracy across complex sentences is needed to reach Band 7.
