IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In recent decades, the importance of consumption of nutrients and their effects are advocated amicably in societies. Conferences and workshops are held to educate the communities for the exact level of consumption during different times. It is also been explained in conventions about the side effects associated with increased amount of consumption where the advantages turn into disadvantages for human body.

A recent study incurred by American Institute of health states that Sodium is most consumed at dinner time through different meals and it is consumed the least at Snack time. This study also indicated the imbalance use of Sodium at different meals of the day, and that it should be used in balanced amount in main meals like lunch and dinner.

Moreover, the study also tells the same story for the Saturated Fat, which are consumed the most at dinner time. Its consumption indicated a list of health problems if consumed before sleeping.

The study continued and explains the effects of consuming the Added Sugar. It is very important for human body but excessive use of it can damage the liver, hence causing health issues. It is consumed mostly in Snack time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response fails to properly meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1. Instead of providing an objective summary of the visual data, the student writes an introduction about health education and social campaigns ("Conferences and workshops are held..."). While the body paragraphs mention sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar, the data reporting is heavily flawed, incomplete, and mixed with irrelevant commentary on health consequences ("can damage the liver"). Furthermore, the percentages provided for sodium (dinner 43%, lunch 29%, breakfast and snacks 14%) are only partially stated, and key comparisons across all meal times and nutrients are largely omitted. There is no clear overview of the main trends. This results in an inadequate task response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic framework, but the logical progression and overall coherence are severely disrupted by the irrelevance of the content. Rather than structuring the response around data comparisons, the writer treats each nutrient as an abstract health topic. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes repetitive ("This study also indicated...", "Moreover, the study also tells the same story..."). Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal organization of ideas lacks the clear progression required for graph summaries. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as shifting abruptly between the study findings and general health advice.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is somewhat repetitive and includes awkward collocations or phrasing not suited to academic data reports, such as "advocated amicably in societies", "study incurred by American Institute of health", and "imbalance use". While terms related to the topic like "consumption", "nutrients", and specific nutrient names appear, the range is limited and frequently inaccurate. Word choices like "incurred" instead of "conducted" or "sponsored" detract from the precision required in Task 1. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control is weak overall.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is low. There are notable errors in verb tense and voice, such as "It is also been explained" (should be 'It has also been explained') and missing articles or prepositions ("at Snack time", "American Institute of Health"). Passive structures are sometimes mishandled. While some basic sentences are formed correctly, frequent errors in grammar and punctuation persist throughout the text, restricting the score to the lower band.
