Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The candidate attempts to address the prompt by summarising the main features of the charts regarding the percentages of sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in typical meals. However, there are notable errors and confusions in the data reporting. For instance, the statement 'saturated fat in dinner is approximately 43% as compared with saturated fat is 73%' is factually incorrect and confused. Additionally, the overview contains a confusing and contradictory clause ('percentage in breakfast is almost same while the the ratio of sugar in snack is more than in snacks'), which fails to clearly outline the main overall trends. While some data points such as the 43% for sodium at dinner and 42% for sugar in snacks are correctly identified, the overall response lacks clarity in presenting a coherent summary of the data, placing it within Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organized into paragraphs, attempting an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs detailing the nutrients. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing phrasing and poor cohesive links. The candidate attempts sequencing markers like 'First of all', 'Next', and 'Secondly', but these do not always guide the reader logically through the data due to muddled comparisons. Paragraphing is initiated, but the internal cohesion within sentences is weak, particularly with repetitive and confusing referencing such as 'while the percentage of sugar in dinner is almost 23%. next, the breakfast contain 16% while lunch contain 23% sugar.' Overall arrangement shows some basic organization, but lacks a clear overall progression, warranting a Band 5 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms such as 'ratio', 'percentage', 'sodium', 'saturated fat', and 'sugar'. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling 'sarurated', and awkward phrasings like 'average ratio' instead of 'average proportion' or 'percentage'. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate to communicate the basic topic of the charts, but attempts at more precise phrasing fail due to lexical inaccuracies and word choice errors, such as 'breakfast contain almost same'. This fits the description for Band 5, where the vocabulary is limited and contains noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or incomplete, such as 'while the percentage of sodium and sarurated fat in dinner is more then added sugar and percentage in breakfast is almost same while the the ratio of sugar in snack is more than in snacks', which creates a run-on and grammatically tangled sentence. There are frequent errors in verb forms and prepositions, such as 'breakfast contain' (instead of 'contains'), 'in snack' (instead of 'as snacks'), and 'more then' (instead of 'more than'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance firmly at Band 5.
