Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully identifies and reports the main features of the four meal types across the three nutrients. The overview correctly highlights key comparative points, such as the high sodium content in dinner and the high added sugar in snacks. Data points are accurately extracted from the visual, noting values like sodium at 43% for dinner and added sugar at 42% for snacks. However, there are some minor descriptive inaccuracies and phrasing issues in the overview, such as claiming that the quantities of nutrients in breakfast were 'aproximately same' when they actually varied between 14% and 16%. Despite minor flaws, all parts of the prompt are addressed, supporting a solid Band 6.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged coherently with a clear overall progression, dividing information into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs covering specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'respectively' are utilised to structure the response. However, referencing and logical transitions are occasionally faulty, particularly in the overview and paragraph transitions where phrasing becomes awkward. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas logically, but the mechanical nature of some cohesive devices limits the score to a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to the prompt such as 'percentages', 'nutrients', 'quantities', and 'proportion'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are often marred by word-choice or spelling errors, such as 'aproximately' instead of 'approximately', 'porportion' instead of 'proportion', and awkward collocations like 'medium percentages' instead of 'average percentages'. While these lexical errors are noticeable and detract from precision, they do not impede overall communication, placing the response firmly at Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures are often clumsy or grammatically flawed. For instance, the opening sentence contains a run-on structure with tense and clause issues: 'The given pie chart illustrate... in which three kinds of nutrients are included if eaten too much then it may be dangerous for health.' There are several subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'the porportion... were' and 'the amount of added sugar... were'. Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.
