IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The chart illustrates the essential components which are needed for our body, but with over consumption it can lead to undesired problems.
Both ths sodium and saturated fat appears to be a major part of our night meal, while sugar does not contribute its highest portion in this. By eating, less at night individuals can avoid getting fatty livers and other metabolism related health concerns.
When we look at snacks, it is more hazardous than the dinner itself, as it contains about 21% of saturated fat and 14% of sodium, sugar adding the most of it about 42%, combining these nutrients, I believe that it can be the most unhealthy meal of the day.
When a comparison was made between the least sugar contributing meals, it appears to be breakfast followed by lunch. In our first meal of the day, 14% of sodium and 16% of saturated fat is present, same with sugar 2ith 16%. However, lunch contributes to having 29% of sodium, 26% of saturated fat and 19% of sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data from the charts, noting that sodium and saturated fat are highest at dinner, while added sugar peaks in snacks. However, the student struggles with accurate data reporting and analysis. For instance, the text claims that breakfast is followed by lunch as the 'least sugar contributing meals', which is incorrect according to the charts where breakfast is 16% and lunch is 19%. Furthermore, the tone becomes overly subjective and conversational ('I believe that it can be the most unhealthy meal of the day'), introducing outside speculation regarding fatty livers instead of focusing purely on objective data summarization. Key comparisons are underdeveloped, leading to a Band 5 performance for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is divided into paragraphs, but the overall logical progression is weak. The student abruptly jumps between different nutrients and meal types without a clear, structured overview or body paragraph organization. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, creating disjointed transitions, such as starting paragraphs with abrupt shifts like 'When we look at snacks...' or 'When a comparison was made...'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the paragraphing does not adequately group related information together to guide the reader smoothly through the comparative data. These issues place the response firmly at Band 5 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication but lacks precision and sophistication. The student attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as 'consumption', 'nutrients', and 'metabolism related health concerns', but makes noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'night meal' instead of 'dinner', 'sugar adding the most of it', and typographical slips like 'ths' and '2ith'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and these errors occasionally cause mild confusion for the reader, aligning with Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is relatively low. There are frequent errors in verb forms and agreement, such as 'Both ths sodium and saturated fat appears' (plural subject with singular verb) and 'sugar does not contribute its highest portion in this'. Punctuation and phrasing are often awkward, as seen in 'By eating, less at night individuals can avoid...' where unnecessary comma usage disrupts the flow. While meaning can generally be deciphered, the frequency of grammatical errors keeps the score at Band 5.
