Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in four meal types in the USA. An appropriate overall trend is identified, noting that dinner is high in sodium and saturated fat while snacks are dominated by added sugar, and breakfast contains the lowest amounts of all three nutrients. Key data points are accurately selected and reported, such as sodium peaking at 43% at dinner and added sugar reaching 42% in snacks. The response is fully developed and satisfies all requirements for Academic Task 1, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'respectively' are used to connect ideas, though referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive ('these three nutrients'). Paragraphing is used appropriately, contributing to a coherent overall arrangement that allows the reader to follow the comparisons effortlessly. This performance aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating terms such as 'percentages', 'nutrients', 'quantities', and 'proportion'. There are some successful attempts at less common phrasing, such as 'increased significantly' and 'highly present'. However, there are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'depicts three types of meals including sodium' (the charts show nutrients in meals, not meals themselves) and 'highly represent in these meal' (instead of represented in this meal). Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, placing this comfortably at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising structures such as relative clauses and comparative constructions ('sodium is more present than any other meals with average percentages of 43% compared to 37%...'). There are some minor grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The three pie charts depicts', 'these three nutrients proportion are increased', 'is more in snacks') and preposition choices ('in dinner' instead of 'at dinner'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout, justifying a Band 6.0.
