IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie-charts demonstrate the average proportions of three essential nutrients in percentage which may be harmful for health if consumed in excessive amounts. These nutrients are discussed for specific meals like Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch and Snacks that are consumed in the United States.
Overall, dinner has highest proportion of sodium and saturated fats, while Snacks have largest proportion for added sugar.
Sodium, being the peak nutrient, makes 43% proportion in dinner, with around equal percentages of 14% in Breakfast and Snacks. Rest portion of nearly one-thirds (29%) is held by Lunch. Saturated fats hold 37% in dinner, followed by about an approximate one-fifth portion (21%) of Snacks. The 26% being second highest amount of saturated fats is being present in Lunch meal, with the lowest occupancy of 16% in Breakfast. Lastly, snacks have highest quantity of added sugar (42%), followed by dinner being nearly a quarter part holder (23%). The remaining is 16% and 19% amount held by Breakfast and Lunch, with former one having lowest proportion of sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the charts and making relevant comparisons across the three nutrients and four meal types. The data cited is accurate and grounded in the source material, correctly identifying that dinner accounts for the highest proportions of sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks contain the most added sugar (42%). An overview is clearly presented in the second paragraph, capturing the most striking overall trends. The response is fully developed, well-proportioned, and satisfies all requirements of Task 1 without any major omissions or misinterpretations of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The writing demonstrates a logical overall organisation, moving smoothly from an introduction to an overview, followed by detailed body paragraphs that break down the statistics. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overarching trends from the specific numerical comparisons. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'while', 'followed by', and 'Lastly' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, although occasional phrasing is slightly clunky, such as 'Rest portion of nearly one-thirds'. Progression is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student displays a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common and precise terms, such as 'proportions', 'excessive amounts', 'occupancy', and 'quantity'. While there are some minor lexical and collocational awkwardnesses—such as 'peak nutrient' or 'Rest portion of nearly one-thirds'—these do not impede communication. The writer effectively employs synonyms like 'proportion', 'amount', 'quantity', and 'portion' to avoid excessive repetition, demonstrating a flexible control of vocabulary suitable for Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including participial phrases ('Sodium, being the peak nutrient, makes...') and relative clauses. There is a good frequency of error-free sentences, and the grammar is generally well-controlled. However, there are a few minor grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as articles missing or misused ('has highest proportion', 'with former one having'), and some slightly clumsy prepositional choices. These minor slips do not interfere with the clarity of the message.
