Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to summarize the charts showing the average percentages of sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in typical meals consumed in the USA. However, the student misinterprets several data points and trends, such as stating that added sugar and saturated fat are the same in dinner and lunch, which contradicts the charts (Lunch: saturated fat 26%, added sugar 19%; Dinner: saturated fat 37%, added sugar 23%). While the response identifies some key features like dinner having the highest sodium (43%) and snacks having the highest added sugar (42%), the overall reporting is confused and imprecise, leading to a Band 4.5 performance for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by confusing statements and mechanical or inaccurate cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand on dinner time' and 'Although in the snacks time... nevertheless'. Referencing is often unclear, and the text ends abruptly mid-sentence in the conclusion ('This is the most perfect way to show this with charts and'). Paragraphing is attempted, but overall cohesion is faulty, corresponding to a Band 4.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

Vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors ('quantitiy', 'thoese', 'balaned', 'suger', 'fad', 'Sodiam', 'took', 'parcentage') and awkward word choices ('less get chance to insert human body', 'mostly took at dinner time'). The student attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as 'sodium', 'saturated fat', and 'added sugar', but the limited range and numerous errors significantly strain the reader and obscure meaning, placing this at Band 4.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The response relies on very basic sentence structures alongside frequent, intrusive grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement errors ('Sodium, saturated fat and added sugar is consumed', 'the saturated fat and added sugar is more consumed') and incorrect prepositional use ('in the snacks time', 'at dinner time'). Complex structures are rarely attempted accurately. These pervasive errors cause frequent difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 4.0 descriptor.
