Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student successfully covers all three nutrients shown in the charts (sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars) and compares them across the four meal categories (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks). Key features are accurately reported, such as the highest sodium and saturated fat consumption occurring at dinner (43% and 37% respectively) and the peak in added sugar occurring during snacks (42%). An overview is also provided at the end, capturing the main trends effectively. Figures are correctly cited from the visual data, and the response demonstrates a clear understanding of the information presented. Minor phrasing around percentages could be smoother, but the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged logically with an introduction, a body paragraph detailing the specific figures, and an overall concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as "To commence with", "However", and "Furthermore". However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or awkward, such as "To which, sugar consumption..." and "While, the lunch...", which detracts from the natural flow. Paragraphing is adequate, but consolidating the structure could improve readability. Overall progression is clear, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, employing terms such as "proportions", "consumption", "maxmum part", and "elevated". There are some unnatural collocations and awkward word choices, such as "low in health quotient if taken in excess amount", "spiked in devouring the snacks", and "eating sodium and saturated fat by folks". Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical control fluctuates between standard phrasing and less natural expressions. A band score of 6.0 reflects this mix of adequate vocabulary and noticeable inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory dependent clauses ("To commence with, the amount of...") and comparative clauses. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including missing articles ("the given combination of pie chart", "residents of USA consumption"), awkward preposition use ("spiked in devouring"), and comma splices or incorrect comma placements ("While, the lunch..."). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the score from reaching Band 7.0.
