IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The three pie chart illustrate the amount of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar consumed in the USA in typical meals. The amount is represented in percentages.

Overall, dinner had the largest proportion of both saturated fat and sodium, while snacks contained the most sugar added proportionally. Breakfast and lunch had a fair distribuition between the three ingredients.

Dinner had the largest percentage of sodium (43%), and saturated fat (37%); however, when compared with sugar added, it only represented 23% of the total consumed by Americans. On the other hand, snacks showed the oposite trend, with 42% of added sugar, and only 21% and 14% of saturated fat and sodium, respectively.

During breakfast, Americans habits showed an avarage between 14% and 16% of each nutrient. And 19% of the sugar consumed were during lunch time, while saturated fat and sodium had 26% and 29% respectively. That shows that Americans consume more sugar when they are snacking than when they are having other meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the three charts. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the key trends accurately. For instance, the student correctly highlights that dinner had the largest proportion of sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks contained the most added sugar (42%). Data points are accurately cited from the visual, such as breakfast habits averaging between 14% and 16% and lunch containing 19% of added sugar. The comparisons made throughout the text are logical and well-supported by the provided figures, fulfilling the requirements for Task Achievement at a Band 7.5 level, rounded to 7.0 due to slight minor generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'On the other hand' and 'however'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function in developing the response. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and the progression could be smoother in the final paragraph where sentences feel slightly disjointed ('And 19% of the sugar consumed were during lunch time... That shows...'). Overall cohesion is clear and logical, warranting a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, including terms like 'proportion', 'consumed', 'distributed', and 'trend'. Less common lexical items such as 'proportionally' and 'trend' are attempted with general accuracy. There are a few lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'distribuition' (spelling error), 'sugar added' instead of 'added sugar', and 'the oposite trend' (spelling error). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly, supporting a Band 6.5 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses such as 'while snacks contained the most sugar added proportionally' and 'when compared with sugar added'. There are several grammatical errors present, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The three pie chart illustrate' instead of 'charts illustrate', '19% of the sugar consumed were' instead of 'was'), and minor spelling mistakes like 'avarage'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors persist, they do not impede communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
