Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar across four meal categories. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, identifying dinner as highest in sodium and snacks as highest in added sugar, while noting breakfast generally as the lowest. However, there are several factual inaccuracies and data confusion within the body paragraphs. For instance, the student states that Americans consumed '43% of sugar in their dinner', which confuses sodium with sugar. Furthermore, the final paragraph repeats the statistic 'Lunch and Breastfast constitued 26% and 16% respectively' under saturated fat, which contradicts the earlier text and chart data. While key comparisons are made, the data errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic overall structure with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the nutrients. However, paragraphing is somewhat disorganized, with the overview blending into the second paragraph and formatting issues throughout. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast' and 'Regarding', but referencing is faulty due to the data confusion (e.g. mixing up meals and nutrient types). Progression is hindered by these structural slips and repetitive sentence openings. Paragraphing is used insufficiently and inappropriately at times, leading to a choppy flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'concentration', 'proportion', and 'constituted'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as referring to sodium as 'sugar' ('43% of sugar in their dinner') and spelling errors like 'Breaskfast' and 'Breastfast'. Other phrases like 'mild proportion' are awkward or inaccurate in this context. While the range is sufficient to communicate basic data trends, the frequent lexical inaccuracies in reporting technical data restrict the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'followed by' and 'In contrast, added sugar was found highest...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('snack have', 'dinners proportion'), punctuation mistakes (comma splices and stray commas), and spelling errors. While the errors do not completely obscure the intended meaning, they occur frequently enough to impede smooth reading and demonstrate limited control over complex grammar.
