IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The 3 pie charts describes the pattern of the comsumption of three types of nutrients across breakfast, dinner, lunch and snacks.
Overall, americans consume most of sodium and saturated fat in their dinner and lunch, while the least of them in their breakfasts wheras added sugar intake is heavily contributed by the desserts in snacks and dinner.
Approximately half of sodium is consumed in dinner. The second biggest source is lunch contributing 29% of daily requirenment. The remaining 30% requirenment is equally fullfilled by breakfast and snacks.
Generally, the same is also true for saturated fat. Dinner dominantes 37% requirenments, followed by around a quarter (26%) by lunch, while breakfast and snacks contributes 16% and 21% respectively to the total fat consumption.
However, the patter of consumption of added sugar is drastically different compared to previous two nutrients. Americans consumed most suger in the form of snacks which constribues to 42% of total intake. Dinner accounts for the 23% of the total intake, wheras lunch and breakfast contains 16% and 19% of the added sugar respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three charts and making relevant comparisons. The overview captures the core contrast well, noting that sodium and saturated fat are largely consumed during dinner and lunch, whereas added sugar peaks in snacks. Key data points are accurately cited, such as dinner accounting for 43% of sodium and snacks making up 42% of added sugar. However, there are minor numerical inaccuracies and typographical errors in the data reporting, such as stating that 'approximately half of sodium is consumed in dinner' when the exact figure given is 43%, and misspelling 'requirement'. Overall, the task is well addressed with a clear focus on the prominent trends, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory statement and an overview paragraph, followed by well-structured body paragraphs dedicated to each nutrient. Cohesive devices and transition words are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'Approximately', 'Generally, the same is also true', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas and categories of data. While referencing is generally clear, some minor issues with mechanical transitions prevent it from reaching a higher band. Nevertheless, the logical arrangement ensures the text is coherent and easy to follow throughout, earning a solid Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'comsumption' (misspelled), 'contributed', 'dominantes', and 'drastically different'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'comsumption', 'wheras', 'requirenment', 'fullfilled', 'dominantes', 'patter', 'suger', and 'constribues'. These errors show that while the range is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, lexical control is inconsistent. Because these errors do not severely impede communication, the performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively. Examples include 'while the least of them in their breakfasts wheras added sugar intake is heavily contributed by the desserts in snacks and dinner' and 'the patter of consumption of added sugar is drastically different compared to previous two nutrients.' However, grammatical accuracy is undermined by frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition use, such as 'The 3 pie charts describes', 'americans consume', 'contributing 29% of daily requirenment', and missing articles ('the previous two nutrients'). These errors mean that error-free sentences are not in the majority, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
