Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to summarise the four charts showing nutrient consumption, but the response suffers from a significant length penalty, falling short of the 150-word minimum at 131 words. While an overview is provided in the second paragraph, some data points are inaccurate or misreported. For instance, the student states 'Added sugar in breakfast and dinner is 23 and 16 percent, respectively', which contradicts the data where dinner is 23% and breakfast is 16%. There is also confusion regarding the percentages for sodium and saturated fats. Due to the under-length penalty and these data inaccuracies, the response only partially addresses the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organized into four paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is hindered by confusing sentence structures and referencing errors, such as 'only 16 percent of them are consumed in breakfast'. Cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'Morever', and 'In contrast' are used, but their mechanical application and occasional awkward placement disrupt the flow of information. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of data lacks a clear analytical structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic description, featuring terms like 'proportion', 'consumption', and 'percentage'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('illustartes', 'nutritions', 'Morever', 'Sodiam') and awkward word choices, such as 'added sugar is the being consumed the least'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts at less common items result in inaccuracies that occasionally impede communication or distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('saturated fat and added sugar are used... slightly more than sodium') and awkward passives ('are accounting for', 'are consumed'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally maintained, but the high frequency of errors in basic and complex structures lowers the overall grammatical score.
