Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by reporting data from the charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in typical meals in the USA. However, the information is presented with noticeable inaccuracies and omissions. For instance, the student states that '14% of sodium is ate in breakfast and the same percentage of sodium is added in diet by snacks', which correctly matches the data for breakfast and snacks, but the selection and reporting of data feel somewhat disjointed and lack a clear overview. Key trends, such as dinner accounting for the highest percentages of sodium and saturated fat, are mentioned, but the overall presentation remains limited and under-developed, keeping the response at this partial level of task fulfilment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text shows some basic organisation with paragraphs breaking up the introduction and body details, but there is a lack of clear overall progression. Transitions between sentences and ideas can feel abrupt, and cohesive devices are often repetitive or inadequate. For example, starting multiple sentences directly with data points without transitional phrases makes the flow mechanical. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as shifting between nutrients and meals without strong signposting, which disrupts the logical development of ideas across the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice and word forms that cause some difficulty or awkwardness for the reader, such as 'ate' instead of 'eaten', 'helath' (spelling error), 'alot' (spelling error), and 'extra sweetness' instead of 'added sugar'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'minimzed', but spelling mistakes and imprecise collocations, such as 'night eating meals' instead of 'dinner', restrict the lexical score to this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic active forms. Attempts at more complex structures often contain faults, such as 'while the breakfasts contain a large portion of sodium with alot sugar consumed through snacks', where prepositional and conjunction use is awkward. There are frequent grammatical errors, including passive voice errors ('is ate', 'is added in body') and subject-verb agreement issues ('The night meals contains'), which cause some difficulty for the reader.
