Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, reflecting a Band 5 level. While the student attempts to report the main features of the charts, the information is presented with notable inaccuracies and confusion regarding the data. For instance, the figures assigned to categories are mixed up, such as stating that 'dinner with sodium is 14 percent' when the chart shows dinner accounts for 43 percent of sodium. The overview is rudimentary and lacks clarity, failing to provide a well-developed summary of the overall trends. To move to a higher band, the writer must carefully select and accurately report key data from the visual prompts, ensuring that figures are correctly matched to their corresponding categories and that a clear, comprehensive overview is articulated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
Coherence and cohesion sit at a Band 5 level due to a lack of clear overall progression and inadequate logical organization. Although some basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'overall', 'after analyzing', and 'furthermore', their application is mechanical and sometimes confusing. The formatting of paragraphs is poorly managed, with the response collapsing into a single, dense block of text with arbitrary line breaks that disrupt the flow of information. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which meal or nutrient is being discussed. Achieving a higher band requires logical sequencing of ideas, clear progression from an introduction to body paragraphs, and the appropriate, flexible use of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
Lexical resource is at a Band 4.5, which aligns closely with Band 5 descriptors. The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring basic terms alongside frequent spelling and word-choice errors that impede communication. Examples of lexical issues include misspellings like 'ellustrates', 'nuterints', 'unhigenic', 'brakfast', 'luch', 'suger', and awkward phrasing such as 'ratio of different meals' and 'people take dinner with sodium'. The range of vocabulary is restricted, and attempts to use less common items fail due to incorrect forms and collocations. To improve, the student needs to expand their vocabulary related to data analysis, learn correct collocations for describing statistics, and pay closer attention to basic spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Grammatical range and accuracy reflect a Band 4.5 level, fitting the Band 5 descriptor of a limited range of structures with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. The response relies mostly on simple sentence forms, and attempts at complex or compound sentences are frequently faulty and ungrammatical, such as 'while one one hand people consumed food with saturated fat in breakfast 16 percent it increase than previous or lunch 26 or dinner 37 percent less than sodium'. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, prepositions, articles, and sentence boundaries. To reach a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of grammatical structures, ensure accurate subject-verb agreement and tense usage, and reduce basic structural errors so that sentences remain clear and grammatically sound.
