IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

This chart illustrates the average consumption of sodium, saturated fats and added sugar contained in four different tpye of meals consumed by the USA residents; break fast, lunch, and dinner.

Overall, dinner accounts for largest proportion of sodium and saturated fat consumption, whereas, snacks contained by far the highest percentage of sugar. Breakfast contributes the smallest or joint-smallest share of all three nutrients.

In terms of sodium, dinner represents the largest proportion, at 43%, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast accounts for 14%, while snacks make up the remaining 14%.

A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat, with dinner again constituting the highest figure, at 37%. Lunch contributes 26%, while breakfast and snacks account for 16% and 21%, respectively.

The distribution of added sugar is markedly different. Snacks are responsible for 42% of total added-sugar intake, which is considerably higher than the figures for dinner and lunch, at 23% and 19% respectively. Breakfast has the lowest proportion, at just 16%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering all three nutrients and comparing the meal types effectively. The overview accurately highlights the main overall trends, such as dinner dominating sodium and saturated fats, while snacks are highest in added sugar. Key data points are well-selected and correctly reported, such as noting dinner at 43% for sodium and snacks at 42% for added sugar. The ideas are clearly presented and supported throughout, though some minor omissions occur, which prevents the score from reaching a higher level. To push further, the response could integrate the data more comprehensively across categories by drawing sharper comparative links between the nutrients.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically by nutrient type, with an effective introduction that outlines the scope of the visual data. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, as seen through transitional phrases like 'In terms of sodium', 'A similar pattern can be seen', and 'The distribution of added sugar is markedly different'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each nutrient and maintain a clean structure. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical, preventing a smoother flow that is characteristic of a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully conveying the key comparisons and proportions using terms such as 'proportion', 'constituting', 'distribution', and 'substantially higher'. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, but also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'tpye' instead of 'type' and 'break fast' instead of 'breakfast'. While these minor slips do not impede communication, they reflect typical limitations at this level. To improve, the writer should refine spelling accuracy and incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated academic collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and participial phrases successfully (e.g., 'contained in four different tpye of meals consumed by the USA residents'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('accounts for largest proportion') and awkward phrasing like 'snacks contained by far the highest percentage', which shows a slight passive/active confusion. Nevertheless, these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication, with many sentences remaining completely error-free, reflecting solid control over basic structures and a reasonable attempt at complexity.
