Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the four charts. An overview is presented early in the response, correctly noting that sodium and saturated fat are highest in dinner, while added sugar peaks in snacks. Key data points are selected and highlighted accurately, such as the 43% peak for sodium at dinner and the 42% figure for added sugar in snacks. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise or lean slightly into descriptive detail rather than fully developing the analytical comparisons throughout the body paragraphs. Overall, the information is well-selected, accurate, and completely fulfills the requirements of this task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear logical organisation, moving logically from an introduction and overview into detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group information by meal categories and nutrients. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, seen in awkward transitional phrases like "In the subsequent manner" and "Untimately". Referencing and substitution are generally clear, but the links between sentences can feel a bit repetitive and formulaic, preventing the progression of ideas from feeling entirely smooth. To reach a higher level, cohesive devices need to be used more flexibly and unobtrusively, ensuring that relationships between sentences and paragraphs flow naturally without relying on forced transition words.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as "substantially higher", "proportion", and "surprising". However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, including phrases like "the uses of both sodium" instead of "consumption", "in the snacks are of the category", and spelling errors such as "slighly" and "Untimately". Furthermore, phrasing like "the shares of dinner was" and "dinner contribute" reveal awkward lexical patterns. These lexical errors and awkward collocations do not impede communication, but they restrict the response from achieving a higher score. Incorporating more precise, natural academic vocabulary and ensuring accurate word forms would significantly elevate this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement and prepositions, such as "the shares of dinner was", "dinner contribute", "sodium for both breakfast and snacks were same", and "in the lunch just 19% of added sugar used". Article usage and pluralisation also show occasional lapses, such as "in the United State of America USA" and "the second most popular meals". While these errors in grammar and punctuation rarely impede overall communication, they occur too regularly to be considered minor slips. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence structures and eliminate basic agreement and prepositional errors.
