Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 150 words, stopping at only 120 words. Furthermore, it addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to mention some figures from the charts, the data is frequently inaccurate or incomplete. For instance, the percentages for sodium and saturated fats are jumbled with conversational phrasing like 'if you take more than', and the response trails off entirely at the end ('while the dinner'). There is no clear overview of the main trends, and the information is presented in a fragmented, list-like manner rather than a coherent summary, placing this criterion at a low level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation attempted through transitional markers like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In the end', but there is no clear overall progression. The essay lacks proper paragraphing, being presented as a single broken block of text. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and inaccurately, and referencing fails entirely toward the end of the response where the sentence is left incomplete. Ideas are not logically sequenced into a well-structured academic report, reflecting characteristics of a lower-intermediate level of coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms and direct repetition of words from the prompt such as 'chart', 'percentage', 'meals', 'unhealthy', and the names of the nutrients. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'may case of unhealthy if eaten in too much' instead of 'may cause health issues if consumed in excess'. These errors and the restricted range of vocabulary mean the language is minimally adequate at best for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of poorly constructed, run-on simple and complex sentence attempts that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, word form, and preposition usage, such as 'in breakfast' instead of 'at breakfast' or 'for breakfast', and 'lastlty' (spelling). Punctuation is largely neglected, with comma splices connecting disparate thoughts. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader in following the intended meaning.
