Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by reporting some of the main features from the charts, such as noting that dinner has the highest percentage of sodium and saturated fat, and that snacks contain the most added sugar. However, the information is presented with noticeable inaccuracies and lacks sufficient detail in places. For instance, the text claims dinner has the 'lower constrate of added sugar', which is poorly explained, and several data points are omitted or described vaguely. Furthermore, the final sentence strays into a general health commentary rather than focusing on the visual data. To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide a more accurate and fully extended overview of all three nutrients across all four meal categories without straying into personal commentary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the response, attempting to move from an introduction to body details. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the formatting of paragraphs is poorly managed, with massive run-on blocks and broken sentences like 'snackscin USA'. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, or mechanical, leading to choppy and repetitive phrasing such as repeatedly stating 'The dinner consumes...' and 'in it'. Reference pronouns and logical transitions between ideas are frequently unclear, making the flow difficult to follow. Improving this criterion requires structuring the essay into distinct, logical paragraphs and employing a wider range of appropriate cohesive links to connect comparisons smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and heavily repetitive, featuring noticeable errors in word choice, word formation, and spelling that occasionally cause confusion for the reader. Examples of lexical slips include 'illustrats', 'snackscin', 'constrate', 'nuturebnt', and 'essiential'. The range is minimally adequate for conveying basic ideas, but attempts at less common terminology result in inaccurate collocations and misspelled items. To improve lexical resource, the student needs to expand their vocabulary related to data reporting and graphs, ensuring accurate spelling and appropriate word forms for nouns, adjectives, and verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex clauses that become heavily flawed. There are frequent grammatical errors involving missing articles ('in USA', 'in breakfast'), incorrect prepositions ('in breakfast' instead of 'at breakfast'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('lunch and breakfast has', 'snacks contains'). Punctuation and spacing are also problematic throughout the text. To achieve a higher score, the student must exercise better control over basic grammatical patterns, ensure correct verb forms and plurals, and reduce the frequency of structural errors that impede readability.
