IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The three pie chart presents the average proportionsofsodium, saturated fats, and added sugar — nutrients that may be harmful if eaten in excess — consumed during breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in the USA.
Overall, the charts shows that sodium and saturated fats follow a similar patern across meals, while added sugar is distributed quite differently. Dinner provides the highest amounts of sodium and saturated fats, whereas snakcs make up the largest share of added sugar. Breakfast consistently accounts for the lowest proportions.
Regarding sodium, dinner represent the lagest proportion, at 43%, making it the primary source of sodium intake. Lunch ranks second, making up 29%, while breakfasr and snacks each account for an identical 14%, the joint lowest figure.
A similar pattern can be observed for saturated fat, repeatedly dinner constitutes the largest share, at 37%, tailed by lunch at 26%, while snacks and breakfast contributes at 21% and 16% respectively.
On the other hand, the distribution of added sugar dffers considerable from the other two nutrients.
Snacks representing a largest portion by wide margin, at 42%, almost double for the figure for dinner (23%).
lunch constitutes at 19%, accompanied by breakfast at 16%.
Overall, the chart represents most of the nutrients such as sodium and saturated fats are largarly consumed at dinner followed by other 3 meals, added sugar is mostly eaten in break

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three pie charts and making relevant comparisons. An overview is provided, highlighting the general patterns across meals and nutrients. Key data points, such as dinner accounting for the highest sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), and snacks dominating added sugar (42%), are accurately cited. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the description of added sugar in the final body paragraph is slightly disjointed and ends abruptly before completion ('mostly eaten in break'). This demonstrates characteristics of fully covering the task requirements while falling just short of a higher band due to incomplete development in the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Information is grouped reasonably into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, moving through individual nutrients, and attempting a concluding summary. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. There is an over-reliance on basic transition phrases, and referencing is occasionally unclear or repetitive. Furthermore, paragraphing breaks down at the very end where sentences become fragmented. To reach the next level, the writer needs to ensure smoother transitions between sentences and maintain a more cohesive, well-structured flow throughout the entire response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the main trends effectively. There are appropriate attempts to use less common vocabulary and precise reporting terms, such as 'proportion', 'constitutes', and 'distribution'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'proportionsofsodium', 'patern', 'snakcs', 'represent' instead of 'represents', 'breakfasr', and 'dffers considerable'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a level of lexical control that prevents the score from rising higher. Improving proofreading for spelling and word forms will enhance the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to structure comparative sentences (e.g., 'Dinner provides the highest amounts... whereas snacks make up...'). There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the three pie chart presents', 'dinner represent', 'Snacks representing'), missing copula verbs ('lunch constitutes at 19%'), and fragments. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over basic grammatical structures, prepositions, and verb tenses.
