With regards to saturated fat similar trend followed with highest proportion in dinner at 37%. The figure for lunch was 26%, whereas 21% saturated fat was present in snacks and 16% in breakfast respectively. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, highlighting key extremes such as dinner having the highest sodium and snacks having the highest added sugar. Data is accurately selected and compared across meals, fulfilling the requirements well. However, to reach a higher level, the response could extend and support some of the comparisons more fully rather than simply listing figures, ensuring that all data relationships are contextualised comprehensively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organization. It begins with an introduction and overview paragraph, followed by well-defined body sentences that group the data logically. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'Moreover', and 'In contrast' are employed to connect ideas, which reflects characteristics of the higher band. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical, and referencing between sentences could be smoother to avoid repetitive structural patterns. Paragraphing is generally handled well, contributing to the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including terms like 'proportion', 'nutrient', 'trend', and 'percentage'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, but occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation appear, such as 'far less amount of sodium contained by lunch' instead of more natural phrasing. Spelling is generally accurate, and word-choice errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a more flexible and precise range of lexical items with fewer awkward collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with adequate control over basic structures. There are several error-free sentences, though some grammatical lapses persist, such as missing articles ('If quantity of all these nutrients exceed') and minor preposition or verb agreement issues ('similar trend followed'). Punctuation is generally functional. The errors are minor and rarely impede communication, aligning well with the characteristics of this level. Incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex structures with greater precision would elevate the grammatical score.
