Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar charts illustrate the average proportion in typical meals of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar, all of which be not good for health if eaten too much.

Overall, the dinner contained sodium and saturated fat had highest proportion among all, but snacks included the more sugar. Therefore, the breakfast and snacks involved sodium and saturated fats had lowest ratio, in breakfast added sugar had minimum ratio.

In this graph, individuals in the America took sodium and saturated fat in their dinner and had percentage 43% and 37% which had maximum proportion. Moreover, breakfast and snacks included 14% sodium for both, and saturated fat 21% for snacks and 16% for the breakfast approximately, However, luch contained 29% sodium and 26% saturated fat.

On the other hand, snacks included 42% added sugar than sodium and saturated fat, in addition to this, 16% sugar added into breakast, and 19% sugar used the Americans in their lunch, therefore, 23% sugar took the Americans in their dinner which had lowest percentage than sodium and saturated fat took the Americans in their dinne

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the charts, such as noting that dinner contained the highest proportions of sodium and saturated fat (43% and 37% respectively), while snacks had the most added sugar (42%). However, some ideas are under-developed or imprecise. For instance, the overview contains minor inaccuracies and clumsy phrasing, such as stating that dinner contained sodium and saturated fat that had the highest proportion, rather than clearly summarising the general patterns across all three nutrients. Furthermore, some comparisons lack clarity, such as the concluding sentence which trails off and is difficult to follow. To move to a higher band, the overview needs to be more sharply focused on the overall trends, and data points should be reported with greater precision and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organise information into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the data. However, cohesion is often faulty and mechanical. Cohesive devices are either repetitive or used inaccurately, such as the excessive reliance on 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'However', which do not always logically connect the ideas. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow the exact comparisons being made between meals and nutrients. Paragraphing is present, but internal logical progression within paragraphs is disrupted by clunky transitions. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure that sentences flow logically from one to the next without awkward interruptions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey basic information about percentages and nutrients. You attempt less common vocabulary items such as 'proportion', 'maximum', and 'approximately', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'luch' instead of lunch, 'breakast' instead of breakfast, and awkward phrases like 'sugar added into breakast' or 'sugar used the Americans'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To reach a higher band, you should expand your range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and use more precise collocational phrasing when describing statistical data, such as 'accounted for' or 'consumed by'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and comparative structures, such as 'all of which be not good for health' and 'which had maximum proportion'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, including subject-verb agreement issues ('all of which be'), missing articles ('in the America'), incorrect prepositions ('took sodium ... in their dinner'), and faulty passive/active voice constructions ('sugar used the Americans'). Punctuation is also weak, particularly run-on sentences joined improperly with commas. These errors require some effort from the reader to untangle the meaning. To improve, you need to exercise tighter control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct verb forms and prepositions, and avoid overly convoluted sentence attempts that lead to grammatical breakdown.
