IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie charts show the average percentages of three nutrients including, sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars consumed in daily meals like breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. The first pie chart displays different percentages in which sodium is consumed, showing highest amount of it being taken during dinner. The next pie chart gives us an average percentage of saturated fats ingested during typical meals with it's highest percentage consumed during dinner. Lastly, the third pie chart manifests an increased consumption of added sugars during snacks.
Overall, the highest intake of sodium is about 43% and saturated fats is 37% which can be seen during dinner meals, whereas, the increased consumption for sugar (42%) can be seen during snack time. The second highest consumption of sodium (29%) and saturated fats (26%) is displayed during lunch meals, but in the case of added sugars (23%) can be seen during dinner time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the key peak consumption points such as dinner for sodium and saturated fats, and snacks for added sugars. However, some parts are more fully developed than others; for instance, the details regarding individual meal categories are somewhat repetitive, and not all data points are fully extended to reach a higher level of comparative analysis. Nevertheless, the core information is accurately conveyed and satisfies the main requirements for this band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division between the introduction and the body/overview paragraph. Ideas are logically sequenced, beginning with a general description of the charts and moving into specific data comparisons. However, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical or faulty, such as the awkward transition 'but in the case of added sugars (23%) can be seen during dinner time', which disrupts the flow of the sentence. Referencing is mostly clear, though paragraphing could be better structured to separate the detailed breakdown from the overarching summary statement.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and nutritional concepts with phrases like 'average percentages', 'ingested during typical meals', and 'increased consumption'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'manifests', 'ingested', and 'consumption', though there is some minor inaccuracy, such as the unnecessary apostrophe in 'it's highest percentage' (which is a punctuation/word form slip). Spelling and word-choice errors are rare and do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively. There are some errors in grammar, such as missing articles ('showing highest amount') and minor structural awkwardness in relative clauses (e.g., 'percentages in which sodium is consumed, showing highest amount'), but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences remain clear. Punctuation is generally controlled, though a few awkward prepositional phrases and dangling modifiers appear within complex sentences.
