Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by covering the main features and making relevant comparisons across the three nutrients and four meal categories. An overview is successfully provided, highlighting that sodium and saturated fat are mainly consumed at dinner, whereas added sugar is mostly found in snacks, and all three are lowest at breakfast. However, some data points are slightly under-developed or presented with minor awkwardness, such as stating that 'almost half of this percent used in dinner foods' when describing added sugar. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls slightly short of the 150-word minimum, containing 149 words. To reach a higher band, the writer should ensure complete coverage without any minor omissions and fully develop every comparative point while comfortably exceeding the word limit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory paraphrase to an overview paragraph, followed by detailed body paragraphs for each data grouping. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response. However, cohesion is at times somewhat mechanical and referencing can be repetitive, relying heavily on basic phrasing like 'is used' and 'is in' to link ideas. Pronoun referencing and substitution could be managed more smoothly to avoid redundancy. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices and ensure that transitions between sentences flow more naturally without repetitive structural patterns.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'nutrients', 'average percentages', and 'snacks'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'average uses' instead of 'average proportions' or 'consumption', and 'nutrients is breakfast foods' rather than 'nutrient in breakfast foods'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control is uneven, resulting in occasional awkward phrasing that slightly distracts the reader. To move up a band, the writer must expand the lexical repertoire and demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and comparative statements. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in United State' instead of 'in the United States'), preposition errors ('in breakfast foods' rather than 'at breakfast'), and subject-verb agreement slips ('The pie charts illustrates'). Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, and the majority of sentences remain understandable. To improve to a higher band, the writer needs to exercise tighter control over complex sentence structures, ensure accurate article and preposition usage, and eliminate basic grammatical slips.
