Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar consumption. An overview is attempted, noting that dinner accounted for the largest share of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks dominated added sugar intake. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others, and there are occasional inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the text states that breakfast and dinner accounted for more than half of saturated fat, whereas the charts show them combined at 53%, but the arithmetic and grouping are somewhat loose. Additionally, the opening overview contains awkward phrasing and minor misinterpretations of the chart labels. To reach a higher band, the overview should be more precise and cohesive, and all data points should be reported with strict accuracy.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically by nutrient category across different meals. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the introduction, overview, and body details. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on formulas like 'Dinner listed' or 'US citizens consumed' to introduce data points. Referencing and progression are occasionally unclear, particularly in transitional sentences where logical links between ideas feel disjointed. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between paragraphs and sentences without depending on repetitive sentence openings.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to convey the basic information, meeting the minimum requirements for the task. The writer attempts some less-common vocabulary related to data reporting, such as 'proportions', 'consumption', and 'category', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'illusrtate' and 'suger'. Word choices are sometimes unnatural or imprecise, such as using 'listed' instead of 'accounted for' or 'represented'. These lexical errors and limitations do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the response to a moderate band. Incorporating a more precise range of vocabulary and eliminating spelling mistakes would significantly elevate the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and passive constructions (e.g., 'was consumed by US citizens'). However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving subject-verb agreement, prepositions ('during the lunch time', 'from their snacks and breaksfast'), and passive voice usage. While these errors rarely impede overall comprehension, they persist throughout the text and demonstrate limited control over complex grammatical patterns. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences and pay closer attention to prepositions, article use, and structural accuracy.
