Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response makes a basic attempt to address the prompt by reporting some figures from the charts, such as noting that dinner accounts for 43% of sodium. However, the response is repetitive and lacks a fully developed overview of the main trends. The student attempts to select key features, but the reporting is incomplete and misinterprets data in places, such as stating that breakfast and snacks have the same percentage of sodium (when the chart shows 14% for both breakfast and snacks, but the explanation lacks clarity and precision). Furthermore, some details are vague or imprecise, reflecting a minimal and restricted response to the visual data. To reach a higher level, the candidate needs to provide a clear, well-supported overview that covers the most significant trends across all three nutrients without unnecessary repetition of isolated data points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The text suffers from a lack of clear logical progression and overall coherence. Ideas are presented in short, disconnected sentences that fail to flow smoothly. While there are basic attempts at grouping information—such as dedicating separate sentences to sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar—the paragraphing is poorly handled, with almost every sentence acting as its own mini-paragraph. Additionally, cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and inaccurate (such as overusing 'The other' to transition between ideas), making the relationships between sentences and data points difficult to follow. To improve, the writer should use standard paragraph structures—such as an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs—alongside a wider range of appropriate transition words to sequence information logically.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily relies on words directly lifted from the prompt, such as 'average percentages', 'typical meals', 'sodium', 'saturated fat', and 'added sugar'. The student attempts to use quantitative terms like 'highest quantity uses' and 'low percentage', but these show limited control of word choice and collocation. There are noticeable lexical inadequacies and awkward phrasing throughout the text, such as 'percentage used' instead of proportion or consumption. Spelling of common terms is generally accurate, but the overall range is restricted and barely adequate to convey the data effectively. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of synonyms and functional academic vocabulary to describe numerical changes and proportions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical structures used are very limited and heavily repetitious. The text relies on simple sentence patterns, and attempts at more complex structures are either absent or faulty, such as in the opening sentence ('The pie charts illustrates show...'), which contains a double verb error. Errors in grammar, word form, and word order are frequent; for example, passive and active voice confusion is evident in phrases like 'sodium uses in Dinner' and 'quantity uses Dinner'. Articles and prepositions are frequently missing or misused throughout the response. To progress, the student must practice forming accurate simple and complex sentences, paying careful attention to subject-verb agreement, verb voice, and the correct grammatical environment for reporting data.
