IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the average proportion in regular meals of three distinct types of nutients- namely sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar, all of these unhealthy if consumed too much, in the US.
Overall, it can be seen that dinner in sodium and saturated fat experienced the highest proportion whereas in added sugar snacks recorded the highest percentage. However, in three different types of nutrients, breakfast experienced the less consumptiion.
On the other hand, sodium and saturated fat accounted for 43% and 37% in dinner, 29% and 26% in lunch, respectively. Moreover, sodium remained the same proportion at 14% in both breakfast and snacks, while in saturated fat accumulated to 21% in snacks and breakfast has the lowest proportion at 16%.
Furthermore, added sugar has experienced the highest consumption of snacks at 42%, 23% in dinner, 19% in lunch, and breakfast recorded the less consumed at 16%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three nutrients across the four meal times, and it successfully incorporates key data comparisons. There is a clear overall summary provided at the beginning. However, certain details are slightly under-developed or expressed awkwardly, such as grouping dinner and lunch figures together in a way that makes the tracking of specific data points a bit dense. Additionally, it must be noted that the response falls slightly short of the required word count, coming in at 148 words instead of the minimum 150. To reach a higher band, the writer should ensure complete development of all data points and comfortably exceed the word limit while maintaining precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. It begins with an introductory overview paragraph followed by body paragraphs structured around the data. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' are used to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is utilized, but the division of sentences leads to minor issues with flow. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to refine the use of cohesive devices to make transitions smoother and more natural, ensuring that information is seamlessly linked throughout the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully attempting less common terms such as 'proportion', 'consumed', and 'accumulated'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as spelling 'nutients' instead of 'nutrients', writing 'less consumptiion' and 'less consumed' instead of 'lowest consumption', and phrasing like 'dinner in sodium and saturated fat experienced the highest proportion'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they reflect a Band 6 level where word choice and spelling inaccuracies prevent access to higher bands. Expanding precise collocational use would improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. There are instances of accurate complex sentences, such as 'while in saturated fat accumulated to 21% in snacks and breakfast has the lowest proportion at 16%'. However, there are grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including tense inconsistencies ('has experienced' versus simple past) and prepositional errors ('consumption of snacks' instead of 'consumption in snacks'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries occasionally cause minor strain. These errors are typical of a Band 6, where grammar is generally understood but lacks the frequent error-free complexity and precision required for higher tiers.
