IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts show average proportions in typical foods eaten in the USA of three nutrient types, all of which maybe unhealthy if eaten in excess. Generally, dinner contains the largest percentage of sodium, added sugars and saturated fats. In contrast, breakfast has the least percentage of the three nutrients which are potentially harmful to the body if eaten too much.

To start with, dinner seems to contain almost half of the sodium, about a third of saturated fat and added sugar. In contrast, breakfast has a a steady percentage of the three types of nutrients, each at about fifteen percent.

The most erratic percentage of unhealthy nutrients is seen in snacks, with a contribution of about a tenth of sodium, a fifth of saturated fat and almost half of the added sugar consumed in diffrerent meals in the USA. Additionally, there is a fairly consistent proportion of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar consumed during lunch, accounting for about a third of the three nutrients that maybe unhealthy if eaten too much.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars. An overview is clearly provided in the introduction, noting general trends such as dinner containing the largest percentages and breakfast having the least. Key comparisons are made across the meals, such as noting that dinner contains almost half of the sodium and about a third of saturated fat and added sugar. However, there is a tendency to slightly over-generalise or approximate some data figures (e.g., stating lunch accounts for about a third of the three nutrients, whereas the chart shows 29% for sodium, 26% for saturated fat, and 19% for added sugar), which keeps the response at this level. To reach a higher band, the student should provide a more precise and detailed reporting of specific data points rather than relying on broader estimations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the response. The essay is divided into an introduction and well-defined body paragraphs that discuss the visual data systematically. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately to guide the reader through the comparisons, using transition phrases such as 'To start with', 'In contrast', and 'Additionally'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate ideas about different meals. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly repetitive in structure, preventing the response from achieving a higher band. To improve further, the writer could integrate more advanced and varied cohesive devices to link sentences and clauses more seamlessly without relying heavily on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, allowing for appropriate descriptions of statistical data. Less common items and paraphrasing are attempted effectively, such as 'potentially harmful', 'erratic percentage', and 'consistent proportion'. Word choice is generally appropriate for an academic report, though there are minor spelling and typographical errors (e.g., 'diffrerent') and some slight lexical inaccuracies or repetitive phrasing regarding 'the three types of nutrients' and 'eaten too much'. These minor slips do not impede communication. To reach the next level, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated academic vocabulary and demonstrate more precise control over collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writing demonstrates a good variety of complex structures alongside simpler sentences, producing frequent error-free sentences. Good control of grammar is evident in the deployment of subordinate clauses and comparative structures, such as 'The most erratic percentage of unhealthy nutrients is seen in snacks, with a contribution of...' Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally well managed. However, a few minor errors persist, such as article omissions or slight agreement slips ('breakfast has a a steady percentage' and repetitive use of 'maybe' instead of 'may be'). To achieve a higher band, the student must eliminate these minor mechanical errors and consistently demonstrate a wider range of error-free complex grammatical structures.
