IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given chart shows the percentage composition of 3 types of neutrients in regular meals consumed in USA. These nutrients are soduim, saturated fat and sugar which can have harmful effect on human health if they are consumed excessively.
Overall, dinner contains the highest amount of soduim and fat while haves 2nd highest amount of added sugar. On the other hand, the distribution of these nutrients in breakfast is minimum.
The distribution of sodium in typical meals is shown in the first wheel. It can be seen that night meal contains the larget percentage of 43% of sodium, lunch contains 29% while snacks and breakfast contains the minimum amount which is that of 14% each.
Similarly, dinner contains 37% of fats while breakfast contains the smallest proportion of 16%. Lunch and snacks contain 26% and 21% respectively.
The distribution of sugar in day-to-day meals is maximum in snacks which is about 42% and least in breakfast which is 16%.
One of the noticable feature is that dinner is the richest in these nutrients while breakfast contains the minimum amount of fats, sugar and sodium.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main patterns and report most figures accurately: dinner is highest for sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks lead for added sugar (42%). Your overview also identifies breakfast as the lowest meal for all three nutrients, which is supported by the chart. This gives the response a clear, relevant summary. To make the account more complete and precise, include the added-sugar figures for lunch and dinner (19% and 23%) and avoid the broad claim that dinner is “the richest in these nutrients,” since snacks have the highest added sugar. The chart shows percentages by meal, so “share” or “proportion” is more precise than “amount.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate descriptions of sodium, fat and sugar. This makes the information easy to follow, and connectors such as “Overall,” “Similarly” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships. However, the final sentence repeats the overview rather than adding a new comparison, and the sugar paragraph is less developed than the others. Some linking is also mechanical, with each nutrient handled in a similar, isolated paragraph. You could improve progression by grouping comparisons across meals—for example, contrasting dinner’s high sodium and fat with snacks’ high sugar—and then use the final paragraph for the remaining key figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “distribution,” “proportion” and “contains,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variety in how you describe the data, but several word-choice and spelling problems limit precision: “wheel” is not the appropriate term for a pie chart, “night meal” is less suitable than “dinner,” and “amount” is less exact than “share” for percentages. There are also repeated misspellings, including “neutrients,” “soduim,” “larget” and “noticable.” Aim for accurate spelling and a more consistent set of data-reporting terms, such as “accounted for,” “represented” and “proportion.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple statements and more developed structures, and most sentences communicate the intended comparisons. For example, “while breakfast contains the smallest proportion of 16%” is straightforward and understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction: “dinner contains … while haves 2nd highest” has an incorrect verb form, and “snacks and breakfast contains” should use a plural verb. The overview’s “the distribution … in breakfast is minimum” is also awkwardly constructed. There is some repetition of simple “contains” clauses, so try combining comparisons with accurate subordinate clauses. Check subject–verb agreement and ensure each sentence has a complete, correctly formed verb phrase.
