IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie charts illustrate the information about average quantity of different types of nutrition which consumed by individuals in the USA. The data has been measured in percentage.
Overall, highest proportion was seen in sodium and smallest in saturated fat. Mostly individuals consumed nutrition at dinner time.
To start with, sodium, majority of individuals consumed sodium at dinner time at 43% and half of the nutrition was consumed in lunch time at 29%. A similar trend was seen at Breakfast and snacks time at 14% respectively. 26% masses contain saturated fat in lunch time and double at dinner time at 37%. A lowest proportion was seen at snacks time which is 21%.
Moving further, a highest proportion was seen consumed sugar at snacks time at 42% and least sugar consumed at dinner time at 23%. A similar trend was seen at Breakfast and Lunch time at 16 and 19% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important patterns, including dinner as the largest contributor to sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), and snacks as the largest source of added sugar (42%). The response also includes figures for all three nutrients and compares meal categories. However, the overview is not fully accurate: “highest proportion was seen in sodium and smallest in saturated fat” compares nutrient types in a way the charts do not establish, and it overlooks the key contrast that dinner leads for sodium and saturated fat while snacks lead for sugar. Some details are unclear or inaccurate, such as saying “half” of sodium was consumed at lunch when the figure is 29%, and describing saturated fat at dinner as “double” the lunch figure. A more precise overview and clearer comparisons would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting details. The sequence from sodium and saturated fat to added sugar is easy to follow, and phrases such as “To start with” and “Moving further” signal transitions. This gives the report a coherent arrangement. However, some linking and references feel mechanical or imprecise, and the overview does not clearly prepare the reader for the comparisons that follow. For example, “Mostly individuals consumed nutrition at dinner time” is too broad because snacks account for the highest share of added sugar. Grouping the figures by meal or explicitly contrasting dinner with snacks would create smoother progression and make the relationships between the data clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “majority,” and “trend,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing chart data. “Quantity of different types of nutrition” and “consumed nutrition” do not accurately express the percentages shown; “share” or “proportion of each nutrient” would be more suitable. “26% masses contain saturated fat” is also unclear, while “A lowest proportion” and “a highest proportion” show awkward phrasing. Repetition of “proportion” and “time” limits the range. Aim for precise terms such as “accounted for,” “contribution,” and “the figure for,” and use meal names directly rather than repeatedly referring to consumption.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the data can still be understood. However, some grammatical errors affect clarity. In the opening, “which consumed by individuals” is missing an auxiliary and has an unclear relative clause; a clearer form would be “nutrients consumed by people in the USA.” The overview also needs articles and a complete comparison: “the highest proportion” and “the smallest proportion.” In “26% masses contain saturated fat,” the subject and verb pattern are faulty, and “double at dinner time” is an incomplete comparison. There are also inconsistent capital letters in “Breakfast” and “Lunch.” Use complete comparative structures, such as “the dinner figure was higher than the lunch figure,” and check articles, verb forms, and sentence completeness.
