IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The three pie-charts illustrate the average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugar in traditional meals consumed in the USA. The pie chart compares the nutrient intake throughout four meals namely, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

Overall, sodium and saturated fats are consumed the most during dinners, while added sugar is consumed most while snacking.

Sodium is most consumed during dinners, comparatively lesser during lunches, and the least during breakfasts and snacks.

While consumption of saturated fats shows a similar picture. Thirty seven percent consumed during dinners--the highest. While, twenty six percent consumed during lunch, while, the second lowest and lowest consumption is during snacks and breakfast, respectively.

The pie-chart relating to average consumption of added sugar demonstrates, that the highest average consumption occurs during snacks.(42 percent) The second highest consumption during dinner, while the second lowest consumption of added sugar happens during lunch. The lowest consumption (at only 16 percent) occurs during breakfast.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You identify the main overall contrast accurately: sodium and saturated fat peak at dinner, while added sugar is highest in snacks. The response also reports the key meal rankings and several figures correctly, including 37% for dinner’s saturated fat and 42% for snacks’ added sugar. This gives the reader a clear account of the chart’s central features. However, some comparisons are expressed only as rankings rather than supported with figures, particularly for sodium, and the overview could capture the full pattern more precisely—for example, dinner is also the lowest meal for added sugar, at 23%, while breakfast and snacks tie for the lowest sodium share at 14%. More selective numerical support and a fuller overview would strengthen an already relevant and well-focused summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a brief overview, and separate discussion of the nutrient charts. This makes the information easy to follow, and the progression from sodium to saturated fat and then added sugar is logical. The overview also helps orient the reader before the details. To make the organisation more fluent, avoid fragmenting comparisons into short or incomplete sentences, such as “While consumption of saturated fats shows a similar picture” and “The second highest consumption during dinner.” Some linking words are also repeated or awkwardly placed, especially “while” in the saturated-fat paragraph. Grouping related comparisons into complete sentences and using a wider range of natural transitions would make cohesion less mechanical and bring the progression closer to consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “average percentages,” “consumption,” “highest,” and “lowest,” and the meaning remains clear throughout. There is some variation in how you describe the data, such as “most consumed” and “highest average consumption.” However, several expressions are imprecise or repetitive: “traditional meals” is not the same as the chart’s “typical meals,” and “Thirty seven percent consumed during dinners” is an awkward way to report a proportion. Repeated use of “consumption” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations such as “accounted for” or “made up,” and use “share” or “proportion” where appropriate. This would improve naturalness and precision while retaining the clear, task-relevant vocabulary already present.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including the contrast in “Overall, sodium and saturated fats are consumed the most during dinners, while added sugar is consumed most while snacking.” The main comparisons are generally understandable. However, some sentence structures are incomplete or awkwardly punctuated. “While consumption of saturated fats shows a similar picture” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “The second highest consumption during dinner” also lacks a main verb. The phrase “that the highest average consumption occurs” has an unnecessary comma before “that,” while “While, twenty six percent…” uses punctuation incorrectly. Practise combining these ideas into complete sentences and checking clause boundaries, commas, and verb forms. More consistent control of these patterns would make the response easier to read.
