IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The three pie charts illustrate the proportions of sodium , saturated fat and added sugar consumed in different meals in the USA.
Overall, it is evident that dinner accounted for the highest proportion of sodium and saturated fat. While snacks contributed the largest share of added sugar. Lunch accounted for the second highest proportions of the same nutrients.Breakfast generally accounted for the smallest proportion of these nutrients.
Looking at the details, dinner represented the highest share of sodium consumption at,43%. Figure for saturated fat and added sugar were 37% and 23% respectively, lunch accounted for 29% of sodium consumption while proportion of saturated fat and added sugar stood at 26% and 23%.
Meanwhile, snacks accounted for 14% of sodium consumption and 21% of saturated fat intake. Their contribution to added sugar consumption was highest among the four meals, by contrast, breakfast accounted for 14%of sodium consumption, while saturated fat and added sugar each represented 16%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: dinner has the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar, and breakfast is generally lowest. Several figures are also reported correctly, including dinner’s 43% sodium and 37% saturated fat, and lunch’s 29% sodium and 26% saturated fat. However, the overview says lunch is second highest for the same nutrients, which is not true for added sugar: snacks are highest, dinner is second, and lunch is third. The detail paragraph also gives lunch’s added sugar as 23%, although the chart shows 19%, and omits the key 42% snack figure. Report all three nutrient patterns precisely and check comparisons against the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement, moving from an introduction and overview to specific figures, and the reader can generally follow the comparisons. The contrast marker “Meanwhile” helps signal a shift to snacks and breakfast. However, the overview’s sentence beginning “While snacks…” is a fragment, and the transition from lunch to snacks does not fully clarify which meal has the second-highest added-sugar share. Some linking is also mechanical, with repeated “accounted for” and “while.” Improve progression by grouping the figures by nutrient or by clearly comparing meals within each nutrient, and use complete sentences with references that make each comparison unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-appropriate terms, including “proportions,” “contributed,” “represented,” and “intake,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe the chart data, rather than relying on one verb throughout. However, several expressions are imprecise or awkward: “Figure for saturated fat” needs a more natural formulation, and “highest among the four meals, by contrast” does not clearly express the comparison. Repetition of “accounted for” also limits flexibility. Choose precise collocations such as “the proportion of” or “made up,” and use comparative language that directly identifies the ranking. Check spacing around punctuation as part of careful written presentation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the overview contrast beginning “While snacks…” and the sentence comparing dinner’s nutrient shares. Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors reduce accuracy. “While snacks contributed the largest share of added sugar” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence; join it to the preceding sentence or make it independent. In “Figure for saturated fat and added sugar were,” the singular/plural construction is inconsistent, and “lunch accounted for… while proportion…” lacks an article before “proportion.” Commas are also misplaced, as in “at,43%,” and sentence spacing is inconsistent. Aim for complete clauses and proofread agreement, articles, and punctuation.
